2. Interesting things about Hospital Cave Cat Ba Island

Similar to Cat Ba Island, Hospital Cave used to be a hidden gem. Gradually, however, the cave has become one of the most appealing destinations in the city and has even been recognized as a heritage site.

All the accolades bestowed upon Hospital Cave are absolutely worthy, as it is a symbol of a valiant time in Vietnam’s history and a gorgeous example of the country’s resilience.

2.1. The history of the name of Hospital Cave

Hospital Cave was once called Hung Son Cave, sharing its name with one of the generals of the Tran Dynasty.

Since the cave is deep within the dense Cat Ba forest and has a wide open space, it was converted into a field hospital during the Second Indochina War. Since then, it has earned a new name of Quan Y Cave, which directly translates to field hospital cave, or just Hospital Cave.

Hospital Cave

This field hospital is not simple. It has an intricate structure with 17 wards and specialized rooms, allowing it to hold up to 100 patients. The name Hospital Cave eventually came to be as a way to commemorate the people’s gallant efforts and recognize the cave’s legacy as a heritage site.

2.2. The one-of-a-kind structure of Hospital Cave

In order to lay low and keep the occupants safe, Hospital Cave has a complex yet well-hidden structure. This has become one of the most interesting points that capture the attention of visitors here.

The original structure is mostly preserved, aside from some minor adjustments for visitors’ safety.

Hospital Cave

The stairs leading up to the cave entrance were detachable wooden stairs for camouflage purposes. It has now been changed to sturdier steel ones for visitors to walk on.

When you enter the cave, you will be greeted by a vastly open space with an altar for fallen soldiers, a set of desks and chairs, and a small, curved door.

The door was made that way to defend the hospital from bullets and bombs from the enemy. The curve helped deflect the debris and prevented them from damaging the door. Also, the door was soundproof, concealing the existence of the field hospital.

Behind the door is an elaborate 3-floor, 2,000-square-meter-wide complex with multiple specialized rooms strategically built to ensure the safety of the occupants, especially the soldiers, during the war.

Hospital Cave

The first floor of Hospital Cave has the main treatment facilities, including wards, surgery rooms, medicine rooms, ammunition rooms, etc.

The second and third floors consist of the administration and leisure rooms built within natural rock walls. However, since the third floor contains some confidential tactical rooms, only the first two floors are open for tourists.

Lastly, you will get a dreamy and panoramic view of Cat Ba Island at the exit of the cave.

The entire field hospital was essentially a closed-off bunker, but escape routes and ventilation were all available for its occupants. The flexibility of Hospital Cave was an impressive trait that showcases the craftiness of Vietnamese people during war time.

If you wish to learn more about the stories and details of Hospital Cave, you can ask for a local tour guide with a small fee of 15,000 VND.
