2. Explore the history of The Huc Bridge in Hanoi

The Huc Bridge was built in 1865 during the reign of Tu Duc. It connects two landmarks: Sword Lake and Jade Mountain Temple. This bridge was named "Huc" and is meant to represent a place where light can be held, collected, and condensed.

It comprises 15 spans that are connected to 32 wooden pillars arranged in 16 pairs, painted with a dark red hue and an inscription of "Huc" on its deck paved with gilding.

The Huc Bridge

This iconic monument has successfully undergone two restorations:

  • First, in 1897, during the Thai Thanh dynasty.
  • Second, after 1952, a bridge span was broken due to overcrowding on New Year's Eve of the Dragon year. Architect Nguyen Ba Lang recast the bridge foundation with cement instead of wood.

3. Admire the architecture of The Huc Bridge Hanoi

The Huc Bridge stands as a relic, with architectural features mirroring traditional wooden houses in the Northern countryside. It is crafted with tenons, pillars, columns, locks, and a house above the bridge.

Tragically, the Huc Bridge was destroyed due to an incident in 1952 and had to be reconstructed according to architect Nguyen Ngoc Diem's design.

The Huc Bridge

The old bridge has been designed with a larger arched curve, boasting 16 rows of piles. Horizontal and vertical beams are cast in concrete, while the bridge deck and bridge itself remain constructed with wood.

A symbol of the sun, The Huc Bridge has always been draped in a brilliant red. Facing east and capturing the early morning light of a new day, it stands for life, joy, and generations of wishes connecting us to our ancestors. An iconic landmark found in Hanoi, this famous bridge is a sight to behold.
