Dong Dinh Art Museum, covering an area of 10,000 square meters, is one of the most compelling attractions in Da Nang City. “Dong Dinh” is the Vietnamese name of the trees that surround the museum. Here, there are numerous antique objects on exhibit that date back somewhere between 100 and 2,500 years ago. These artifacts are from the ancient Chinese, Champa, Sa Huynh, and Dai Viet cultures.

Dong Dinh Art Museum is located in the center of Son Tra Peninsula, to the left of Linh Ung Pagoda. This art museum is one of the three museums that have received a construction permit from the government to be built right inside Son Tra Nature Reserve.

As this is a private museum, there is a small entrance fee of 20,000 VND per ticket, which is equivalent to $1. Entrance is free for children under 12 years old.

To get to Dong Dinh Museum, you can take Hoang Sa Road and head straight to Linh Ung Pagoda. On the road, there will be an alley which leads to the museum.

The first place you can see in Dong Dinh Art Museum is the fishing village memorial house. This small cottage preserves the memories of an ancient fishing village in Son Tra Peninsula. Moreover, it is built from the bodies of two ships and five old basket boats from Nam Tho Village. Here, surrounded by fishermen’s tools and furnishings, visitors can feel like they are walking in a real house of fishermen.

The antique exhibit house consists of two Ruong houses, which are designed to recreate the architecture of the ancient Kim Bong artisans. Here, there are collections of antiques from the 54 ethnic groups in Vietnam. Notably, there is the Sa Huynh collection which includes stone accessories and leaf earrings, the pottery collection which includes various objects from the Ly, Tran, and Nguyen dynasties.

Stepping into the ethnographic gallery, visitors can catch a glimpse into the life of the Central Highlands indigenous people. It is said that Doan Huy Giao, the owner of Dong Dinh Art Museum, had to go to the villages in Central Highlights in order to collect the objects for this collection.

Unlike the exhibitions above, the art exhibition space in Dong Dinh Art Museum has a more modern design. Nevertheless, it still preserves the classic patterns of Vietnamese ancient houses. Inside, there are many artworks by Dinh Y Nhi and Dang Viet Trieu, two renowned Vietnamese artists.

  • The road to Dong Dinh Art Museum is generally in good condition. However, there are some sharp turns, thus visitors should mind their driving.
  • There are no gas stations near the museum, so make sure you have a full tank before the trip.
  • As the museum nestles amidst lots of trees, you should wear comfortable long-sleeved clothes and bring insect repellents to avoid insect bites.
