1. About Hanoi Ceramic Mosaic Mural

Hanoi Ceramic Mosaic Mural, located in Hoan Kiem District, is in close proximity to West Lake and Truc Bach Lake, painted along the walls of the Red River dike system in Hanoi. This ceramic work runs along an array of streets, such as An Duong, Yen Phu, Tran Quang Khai, Tran Nhat Duat, and Tran Khanh Du.

The vibrant Hanoi Mosaic Wall was made by 20 local artists, 15 international artists from 10 countries, such as France, Italy, USA, and Spain, over 100 artisans from some traditional pottery villages, and 500 Vietnamese and international children. They all came together to create this beautiful mural.

This work was built to mark the 1,000th anniversary of the founding of the citadel Thang Long (ancient Hanoi). It has also been recognized as the world's longest ceramic mosaic by the Guinness World Records. This mosaic has become an attraction that should not be missed out on by tourists when they visit Hanoi. Not only is it a reflection of the nation's arts and history, it also contributes to promoting those values to the world.

2. Where does the idea of Hanoi Mosaic Wall come from?

The idea of making Hanoi Ceramic Mosaic Mural came from Nguyen Thu Thuy, a woman with a deep love for the capital city, who is also a journalist of culture and arts in Vietnam. She aimed to mark the 1,000th anniversary of the founding of Thang Long citadel by transforming Hanoi’s dike system into a cultural work of art, to reinvigorate urban Hanoi and bring local communities together through public art.

The main material used to create the mosaic mural was ceramic tesserae, a type of tile usually used to decorate houses and social buildings thanks to its endurance. Therefore, the idea of utilizing ceramics to build a mosaic mural was uncommon yet creative.

3. The distinctive features of Hanoi Ceramic Mosaic Mural

The ceramic mural along the Red River dike system is about 1.7 meters tall and 3,850 meters long, holding the record for the world's largest ceramic mosaic of the Guinness Book of World Records. This work is nearly 7,000 square meters large, in which each square meter is skillfully assembled by 1,000 pieces of ceramics, forming a vivid and colorful work of art.

The ornate patterns on the wall, combined with modern artwork and children's paintings, serve as a visual representation of the country's history in various periods. In addition, people also use ceramics coated with colored glaze heated at 1,200 degrees Celsius in order to ensure durability against time for this work.
