1. Overview of Voi Phuc Temple (Hanoi)

1.1. Location

Voi Phuc Temple (Linh Lang Temple) stands out among various attractions of Hanoi. It is located on Kim Ma Street, beside the tranquil Thuy Le Park in Ba Dinh District. As one of the Four Temples of Thang Long (ancient Hanoi), it guarded the West Gate of the ancient citadel. Sitting atop Long Thu Hill, the temple is nestled within a spacious area surrounded by lush greenery. With its front facing the Imperial Citadel and looking over the shimmering Thuy Le Lake, it is a peaceful haven steeped in history.

1.2. History

Voi Phuc Temple is associated with the legend of Linh Lang Dai Vuong, a guardian deity who made significant contributions to the country.

According to the records at the temple, during the reign of King Ly Thanh Tong (1054-1072), the king took a concubine named Hao Nuong. Their son, Hoang Chan (Linh Lang), was the incarnation of the son of the Dragon King. As a child, the prince lived with his mother in a palace in Thi Trai, where Voi Phuc Temple stands today. When the Song army invaded, the prince sought the king’s permission to join the battle.

After emerging victorious, the prince fell ill and passed away. The king, deeply saddened by his loss, constructed a temple in his land in honor of the prince. Legend has it that before heading into battle, a war elephant knelt at the prince's feet to allow him to mount. This is why the temple’s gate features two elephant sculptures, and the temple itself is named Voi Phuc - meaning "Kneeling Elephant."

2. Architectural highlights of Voi Phuc Temple

Voi Phuc Temple impresses tourists with its unique architecture. To enter, visitors will pass through a four-pillar gate flanked by two steles and a pair of kneeling elephants. There is a secondary four-pillar gate close to the main road. After entering, visitors will follow a tree-lined path nearly 100 meters long that leads to the temple.

The temple's front hall has three compartments and two wings. In the main hall, there is a set of royal seats, a large drum on the left, and a bronze bell on the right. Small roofs on either side shelter a pair of red and white horse statues. The inner sanctum, with three bays, houses wooden and bronze statues on an altar.

The temple's main roof is adorned with two dragon figures, and the four corners of the building feature curved eaves that are shaped like mythical beasts. The rear hall honors the mother of Prince Linh Lang and the Three Holy Mothers, with columns made from lim wood. Notably, from the front to the rear of the temple, there are stone statues depicting crocodiles transforming into dragons.
