21/09/2025 133.312

Minh Dang Quang Temple is more than just a spiritual site - it is a living piece of Ho Chi Minh City’s cultural heartbeat. Known for massive architecture, unique history, and four remarkable national records, this temple attracts thousands of visitors every year.

1. Where is Minh Dang Quang Temple? How to get there?

Located at 505 Vo Nguyen Giap Street, Binh Trung Ward, Ho Chi Minh City (formerly An Phu Ward, Thu Duc City), Minh Dang Quang Temple is one of the most remarkable Buddhist complexes in southern Vietnam. Just a short drive away from the bustling downtown, this temple offers a serene retreat from the chaos of urban life.

2. What is Minh Dang Quang Temple famous for?

2.1. The history of over 50 years

Back in 1968, this area was nothing more than barren fields. It was Venerable Master Giac Nhien - founder of the Mendicant Buddhist Sect - who envisioned a sanctuary of wisdom and compassion. With collective effort from monks and followers, the temple gradually took shape, beginning as a humble hall made of bamboo. Despite financial struggles, the community persisted. By the late 1980s, trees were planted across the grounds, transforming the once-empty land into a green oasis. The most significant reconstruction came in 2009 when the temple underwent a large-scale renovation.

2.2. The four records

In 2019, Minh Dang Quang Buddhist Temple was recognized with four Vietnamese records:

  • The four largest stupas in Vietnam - Each stupa is octagonal, golden, and symmetrically placed around the main hall, symbolizing balance and enlightenment.
  • The largest wooden stupa dedicated to Buddha - Located inside the main hall, this colossal wooden stupa is intricately carved and radiates solemnity.
  • The largest venue commemorating the 60th anniversary of Master Minh Dang Quang’s passing - Tens of thousands of monks, nuns, and devotees gathered here in 2014 to honor the founder.
  • The largest re-enactment of alms-round tradition in Vietnam - The ancient practice of monks collecting offerings was revived here on an unprecedented scale.

3. Things to do at Minh Dang Quang Temple

3.1. Explore the triple-arch gate and sacred statues

Your journey begins at the triple-arch gate. As its name suggests, this gate is designed with three arches, symbolizing the Buddhist path to liberation - wisdom, ethics, and concentration. The stone pillars are adorned with intricate carvings of lotus flowers and dharma wheels. Just beyond the gate stands a statue of Bodhisattva on the right, embodying compassion, while a statue of Maitreya Buddha smiles warmly at the center of the courtyard. These statues are popular spots for visitors to pray at.

3.2. Visit the main hall

At the center of Minh Dang Quang Pagoda lies the grand main hall, a structure that embodies both spiritual solemnity and architectural mastery. Measuring 40 meters wide and 70 meters long, the three-tiered building immediately commands attention.

The upper floor is the most sacred space, featuring an octagonal shrine with a diameter of 32 meters. At its heart sits a serene statue of Shakyamuni Buddha. Beneath the shrine lies a vast meditation hall, a place where monks and devotees gather for collective practice. Just behind the meditation hall is another chamber, where a reclining Buddha statue rests in the posture of Nirvana, symbolizing the Buddha’s final liberation.

On the lowest floor, the lecture hall provides an arena for dharma talks, ceremonies, and festivals. Scattered throughout the complex are additional rooms, including small sanctuaries, monks’ quarters, and a library that preserves sacred texts.

3.3. Admire stupas

One of the most striking features of Minh Dang Quang Temple is its four golden stupas. Arranged symmetrically around the main hall, they shine brilliantly under the sun with their cloud-patterned roofs. Each stupa carries its own spiritual meaning. On the left stands the Kassapa Stupa, dedicated to the Seven Buddhas and the patriarchs of the Buddhist tradition. To the right is the Relic Stupa, where sacred scriptures, relics, and statues are carefully preserved. Behind the main hall rise two additional stupas, which serve as memorial towers where the ashes of monks and followers are kept.

3.4. See the ancient Bodhi tree

A visit to Minh Dang Quang Institute would not be complete without seeing the ancient Bodhi tree, a living symbol of enlightenment. Planted in 2014, the sapling was gifted from Sri Lanka and descends from the original Bodhi tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment over 2,000 years ago. Today, it grows tall and strong in the temple grounds, offering shade to pilgrims who meditate beneath its branches.

3.5. Enjoy vegetarian food

Before concluding your visit, stop by Thien Duyen Vegetarian Restaurant within the temple grounds. It is a peaceful dining spot that serves wholesome vegetarian dishes prepared with fresh ingredients. From fragrant soups to traditional rice plates, every meal reflects Buddhist values of mindfulness. Dining here is not just about eating - it nourishes the body and soul.
