2.1. eRegister

  • What is eRegister

The MFA eRegister system is a free service provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) to all Singapore citizens who travel or reside overseas. Regardless of whether you are traveling abroad for study, work, or leisure, the eRegister system allows you to record information about your travel itinerary. The information provided will allow the MFA to contact you in order to make sure you are safe and, if need be, provide assistance in case of an emergency (such as natural disasters, civil unrest, and so on).

  • How to eRegister in Vietnam

You will need an internet-connected device (smartphone, laptop, etc.) to log into your Singpass account, and through Myinfo, pre-fill your personal particulars in eRegister. You will need to complete your travel plans online via eRegister.

The following information will be required for you to complete your eRegister record:

  1. Your personal particulars;
  2. Those traveling with you (if you are traveling as a group);
  3. Your travel itinerary, including accommodations, contact information, and the duration of the stay in the country/city you are visiting; and
  4. The name and contact number of a person in Singapore to contact in case of emergency.

2.2. Passport matters

Singapore Embassy in Vietnam

Traveling abroad means that you, as a foreign citizen, will need a passport. It allows you to receive any assistance on your trip from your government, if necessary. In case of passport damage or loss, the Singapore Embassy in Vietnam and Singapore’s MFA will provide assistance for Singaporean travelers to apply for a new passport or find a way to replace it.

Applying for a new passport

You might need to apply for a new passport if:

  • It is your first time applying for a passport
  • Your passport is running out of pages
  • Your passport has expired, or is expiring in nine months or less
  • Your passport is lost or damaged

Loss of passport

If your passport is lost, you should make a report through the ICA website within 14 days of losing it: https://www.ica.gov.sg/documents/passport/loss

Damage of passport

A damaged passport will not be accepted while you are traveling abroad. You should consider replacing it in case:

  • It is torn in any way
  • There are missing or detached pages
  • The binding has come loose or is frayed
  • Water damage has resulted in faded pages
  • The RFID chip is clearly damaged
  • The biodata page is cracked or detached

Information for passport application

For any passport application, the following information will be required:

  • Online:
    • Singpass login
    • Details on how the passport was lost
  • Over the counter at ICA Building
    • Your digital/physical IC (for adults) or birth certificate (for applicants aged below 16*)
    • Details on how the passport was lost

*Note: A police report is not required for the replacement of a Singaporean passport.

For overseas, you must log into the ICA’s e-Service using Singpass to complete the online application form or submit it in person at a Singapore Overseas Mission: https://eservices.ica.gov.sg/esvclandingpage/apples.

3. Vietnam travel tips for Singaporean citizens

Below are some travel tips for your safe travel experiences in Vietnam:

  • Vietnam has a visa-free policy that allows travelers from Singapore to stay up to 30 days if your Singaporean passport has at least 6 months of validity since your entry date. However, if you overstay, there will be fines applied. So, plan your trip, or apply for a Vietnam travel visa before your visit.
  • An E-visa for Vietnam is also recommended for your visit, as it is convenient, easy to apply, and available for visitors from up to 80 countries. The E-visa will cover you for up to 30 days of stay, with payment of up to 25 USD per application.
  • If you are carrying any medication, be sure to bring your doctor's prescription as you may need to show it at the customs checkpoint.
  • Familiarize yourself with the customs regulations of the country you are visiting, as some may require you to declare items that are subject to quarantine restrictions upon entry.
  • Stay informed about local news and regulations at your destination. Seek information from experienced travelers, travel agents, tourist information offices, and airlines.
  • Create or save copies of important documents such as your identity card, passport data page, credit cards, and travelers' checks in case of loss. Leave the copies with your trusted family and friends as a backup.
  • Keep your passport and identity card separate to reduce the risk of losing both.
  • Avoid carrying excessive cash and valuables, and never leave your belongings unattended.
  • Do not carry any package through customs on behalf of others.
  • Keep the contact of the Singapore embassy in Vietnam in hand in case of emergency.
