1. General features of the Vietnam flag

What does the Vietnam flag look like? Vietnam official flag has a bright red background with a dazzling yellow star in the center.

2. When was the Vietnam flag made?

With a rich history and great significance regarding the nation's sovereignty, the Vietnam flag has become the national pride of the Vietnamese people. The history of Vietnam flag can be traced back to the 20th century, during the wars against foreign invaders.

Vietnam flag

Today, the internationally recognized Vietnam flag is the symbol of an independent and united country. It made its first appearance on November 23, 1940, in South Vietnam. Back then, Vietnam was still a French colony, and the flag was a revolutionary symbol against the colonial power in this region. The Vietnam flag is said to be designed by Nguyen Huu Tien, a leader of the resistance force who was later imprisoned and executed.

At a conference in 1941 where Viet Minh, a national independence coalition, was established by its leader Ho Chi Minh, the Vietnam flag was on display. At a meeting held in Tan Trao Village on August 16, 1945, Viet Minh declared it to be the flag of Vietnam.

On September 2, 1945, Vietnam's independence was declared in Ba Dinh Square, Hanoi after the Japanese surrendered. The flag then became the national symbol of North Vietnam. In the meantime, colonial laws were reinstated in South Vietnam by French troops who returned to the country in October.

It was not until South Vietnam gained independence and the whole country was reunited in 1976 that the Vietnam flag flew in the southern region. Since then, the red flag with the yellow star has become the official flag of Vietnam and has been flying all across the nation.

3. Why is the Vietnam flag red with a yellow star?

What do the colors of the Vietnam flag mean? What does the Vietnam flag represent?

Nguyen Huu Tien, the designer of the flag, stated that the color red symbolized blood, or the sacrifice of Vietnamese soldiers and people in the fight for the country's independence. The yellow color of the star is said to represent the skin color of the Vietnamese people of all classes, including farmers, businessmen, workers, soldiers, and intellectuals.

On significant occasions like Tet Holiday, Reunification Day, National Day, etc., Vietnamese people proudly display the Vietnam flag outside their homes and along the streets. The Vietnam flag also appears frequently on T-shirts and other local souvenirs.
