11/01/2024 5.491

Pho Thin Hanoi captures the essence of Vietnam's culinary heritage in every bowl. As you embark on a culinary adventure at Pho Thin Hanoi, you will immerse yourself in the rich flavors and aromatic delights of Vietnam's capital city.

Pho Thin Hanoi

Pho Thin Hanoi is a renowned culinary gem, where authentic pho takes center stage, delighting food enthusiasts with its exquisite flavors, comforting broth, and perfectly cooked noodles. Capturing the essence of Vietnam's culinary heritage, Pho Thin Hanoi stands as a beloved destination for discerning food lovers on their Hanoi travel.

1. About the two renowned brands of Pho Thin Hanoi

There are actually two famous Vietnamese pho restaurants that go by the name of “Pho Thin Hanoi”, namely:

1.1. Pho Thin Bo Ho Ha Noi

  • Address: 61 Dinh Tien Hoang, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi

Pho Thin Bo Ho has a rich history that dates back to the 1955s. Founded by Mr. Bui Chi Thin, this establishment utilized a traditional Hanoi pho recipe. Through the meticulous cooking techniques, Pho Thin Hanoi Bo Ho grew in popularity word-of-mouth, becoming one of the best places to eat in Hanoi. Today, Pho Thin Bo Ho continues to be a beloved destination for locals and tourists alike, preserving the traditional taste of the authentic Hanoi-style pho.

1.2. Pho Thin Lo Duc Ha Noi

  • Address: 13 Lo Duc, Hai Ba Trung District, Hanoi

Although seemingly bearing the same name, Pho Thin Lo Duc is not Pho Thin Bo Ho. It was opened in 1979 by Mr. Nguyen Trong Thin, who had no relations with the former Mr. Bui Chi Thin. At the time, Pho Thin Hanoi Lo Duc introduced a new style of pho, which was named “pho tai lan”. Until now, pho tai lan has remained the signature of Pho Thin Lo Duc, helping it become another beloved destination for locals and visitors who seek a delicious bowl of pho in Vietnam capital.

2. Differences between the two brands of Pho Thin Hanoi

2.1. The space of the eatery

Pho Thin Hanoi Bo Ho has been a long-standing establishment for almost 70 years. While the original owner, Mr. Bui Chi Thin, is no longer with us, his grandson has taken over the legacy. Despite the passage of time, the space of Pho Thin Bo Ho has retained its nostalgic charm, representing the essence of the capital city. The weathered old sign and the closely arranged tables at the entrance remain unchanged here. Just across the staircase, you can find an elderly couple selling “quay” (fried dough) and iced tea.

On the contrary, Pho Thin Lo Duc’s increasing popularity is partly thanks to its spacious dining area, allowing customers to dine comfortably in a home-like setting instead of sitting on the crowded sidewalks. In order to serve its guests better, the restaurant has undergone upgrades not only in terms of space but also in service. The utensils are more shiny and polished, and more modern paper boxes and spice containers are provided.

2.2. The cooking method and flavor

Pho Thin Hanoi Bo Ho offers a harmonious combination of flavors with its well-balanced ingredients. The broth is light and aromatic, infused with the essence of beef bones and spices, providing a savory and satisfying taste. The noodles are cooked to perfection, with a delicate texture that complements the tender beef slices and other meat cuts. The herbs and condiments, such as lime, chili, and basil, enhance the overall flavor profile, adding a refreshing and aromatic touch.

On the other hand, Pho Thin Lo Duc has a distinctively different taste. The thicker layer of bean sprouts on the surface of the bowl adds a crunchy texture and a slightly earthy flavor to the dish. This, combined with the well-cooked beef and pork bone broth, creates a robust and flavorful experience. The taste is influenced by the thicker layer of onions, which adds a stronger flavor to the overall profile. The broth is also richer, with a layer of fat floating on the broth surface.

It is hard to say which style of pho is better, as the answer is entirely based on personal preference and individual experiences. Some may prefer the balanced flavor of Pho Thin Bo Ho, while others may enjoy the bolder taste of Pho Thin Lo Duc.

2.3. The prices of pho

At Pho Thin Bo Ho, customers can place their orders first, finish their meals, then pay. If they want quay or iced tea, they can order from the elderly couple and pay them separately. On the other hand, at Pho Thin Lo Duc, customers will order everything at once and pay upfront before enjoying their meals.

A bowl of pho at Pho Thin Hanoi Bo Ho is typically priced between 50,000 and 80,000 VND, depending on the choice of toppings. Meanwhile, a standard bowl of pho at Pho Thin Hanoi Lo Duc is priced at 80,000 VND. Note that these prices are for reference only, and the actual prices may change in the future.
